“Or should I be making the weird art that is haunting me, that frightens me, that I don't know how to make, that I don't know if anyone in the whole world will understand?”

- Deidre O’Connell

For someone raised by two artists, both of whom have grown from art in different ways. They have always found joy from experiencing art that might be strange or oftentimes ugly to some, I find myself; predictably, being a direct product of their ideals that it’s okay to embrace impermanence and enjoy the absurdity of life. I long to be a part of theatre that is just plain bizarre but will also bring a smile to a viewer's face.

As a Chicago based Scenic Designer and Paint Charge, my background in fine arts and craftsmanship give me an interesting perspective on the creation of theatre specifically on the scenic design aspect. I often try to bring some of the compositional elements one would find in a painting in a museum to the stage.

I’m very inspired by a range of productions, mainly works written by playwright Eugene Ionesco especially after doing the scenic design for a version of The Chairs for Columbia College Chicago. I greatly admire how one can play with the visuals of an absurd piece and how I as a designer can heighten that world for the viewer. I want to keep designing for weird plays and at the same time I’d love to dip my toes into the realm of Opera.
